Jude didn’t sit down to write this letter.

He said so himself. He was ready to write about something else, the salvation they shared, something encouraging, something that felt good to put on paper. And then something stopped him. He felt compelled to change direction entirely and write what he actually needed to say instead of what he planned to say.

​

When a man changes course mid-stride because he feels the weight of what’s at stake, that’s not panic. That’s urgency. And urgency means something is actually on the line.

​

The faith was under threat. Not from the outside but from the inside. People had crept in quietly, without anyone noticing at first, and they were pulling at the foundation of what had been entrusted to the church. And Jude looked around and realized somebody had to say something. So he did.

​

That word contend isn’t soft. It’s the same family of words used for an athlete straining for the finish line, a soldier holding his position when everything in him wants to give up. It means to fight for it. Not aggressively, not meanly, but earnestly. With everything you have. Because what you’re holding onto is worth it.

​

And notice what Jude says about the faith itself, once for all delivered. Not still being figured out. Not open for revision based on what’s comfortable or culturally convenient. It was given. It is complete. What was entrusted to the saints then is the same thing entrusted to us now.

​

That’s not a burden. That’s a privilege. We were handed something real, something proven, something that has outlasted every attempt to water it down or push it aside. And we are responsible for what we do with it.

​

So the question Jude’s urgency puts in front of us is simple, are we contending?

 

Are we living the faith with enough conviction that it’s clear we actually believe it?

 

Are we paying attention to what’s quietly creeping in, or have we gotten too comfortable to notice?

​

The alarm has already been sounded.

 

The only question is whether we’re listening.
